The airbag (5) is built into an opening (4) in the dashboard, with the airbag holders (9) supported by the steering column component (14). The holders have bottom-integrated elements (8) used to absorb impact and bottom-integrated step-shaped supports (15) connected to the main airbag holders are secured to the steering column and in turn integrated in the absorbers at their forward end. The supports thus dictate the position of the contained airbag. The airbag is thus built into sides of the dashboard opening (4) via stepped side parts and bag side holders in addition to column-side holder and absorber. The airbag top cover part (6) closes off the dashboard opening and is fixed to the airbag side-holders.
