The hydraulic brake system has a brake control valve between the master brake cylinder and the wheel brakes. The brake control valve also connects the servo brake force with the wheel cylinders. A failsafe control isolates the servo brake force if a failure is detected and provides a direct connection between the master brake cylinder and the wheel brakes. The failsafe control is periodically tested. The testing of the failsafe control is automatic and at set intervals, and when the vehicle is stopped. It is performed when the brake pedal is not pressed. The control monitors the change in brake pressure when the control valve is operated. A warning signal is operated if there is a failure, indicating to the driver that only manual braking is available.
