The fibre-optic sensors fitted in the building are used to monitor changes is the linear, surface or spatial distribution of temperature. The measurement data is compared with one or more reference models to determine anomalies or hazard situations from a spatial representation of the temperature distribution. The data are evaluated with the aid of a computer model which represent the geometry of the sensor array in the building as spatial zones, eg. individual or groups of rooms, cable ducts, sections of ducts, complete buildings or groups of buildings. As part of a computer aided facility management system, the data are visualised graphically and processed for building supervision and initiation of optical or acoustic signals in hazard conditions, control of safety doors and escape routes, shut-down of electrical circuits and supplies.
