In the meat industry an instrument is used to determine the meat quality of carcasses, such as the meat colour. The instrument comprises an optical probe which is designed to be introduced into carcasses or cuts thereof. The probe is provided with optical means which measure the light-reflection power of the meat. To control or adjust the instrument the probe is introduced into a medium with a known extinction of light and the instrument is adjusted to show the light-reflection value which corresponds to the extinction of the medium. The medium is a monodisperse latex of a polymer, such as polystyrene. This medium has an extinction which is easy to reproduce, it has a long shelf life, and the light-reflection value measured in the medium is independent of the temperature of the medium.
|
