The top cover sheet 2 is attached by looping around the front of the dimensionally stable roof frame 6 and is secured in place by a rail 10 which is bolted 12 to the underside of the frame. The rail has an attachment flange and an accommodation 13 for a sealing member for sealing the roof against the front frame of the car. At the rear of the roof frame 5 a holding strip 17 is secured to the underside of the roof covering via an attachment strip 19 bonded to the top cover at one end, the attachment strip having a nipple-like lug (20) when viewed in cross section on the other end which mates with a receptacle (21) in the holding strip, the holding strip being releasably clipped to the frame 5. In other embodiments (Fig. 4) the front of the top covering is secured at the back of the rail by a similar nipple-like lug (37) trapped between the rear of the rail (39) and the underside of the front of the frame (5).
