There is disclosed the combination of a sealed envelope and a substantially rectangular planar card carrying information in machine readable code. The envelope has two walls (1, 2) between which the card (3) is sandwiched. A line of weakness (6) is present in each wall adjacent one edge of the card, to define on one side of the line a pouch of substantially the same size as the card, and on the other side of the line an extension to the pouch. A portion of at least one face of the card extends beyond one of the lines of weakness whereby when the extension has been detached along the lines of weakness, the exposed area of the card can be gripped for removal of the card from the pouch. Since the envelope is sealed, the card cannot be removed without breaking the envelope, usually by tearing along the line of weakness. That enables a purchaser to be sure that the card has not already been used. Opening the envelope by removal of the extension leaves a pouch of substantially the same size as the card. This both enables the pouch to be used to protect the card even after the envelope has been opened, and enables the pouch, with the card in it, to be kept in one of the pockets commonly provided for cards in wallets, purses, filofaxes etc. |
