PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a basic potassium aluminum sulfate for a paper making filler by fractionally depositing the leachate of aluminum sulfate and potassium sulfate to obtain the double salt and heating the double salt to produce the sulfate. SOLUTION: The leachate of Al2 (SO4 )3 , K2 SO4 , Fe2 SO4 and other sulfates is introduced into a surface-cooled crystallizer to deposit and remove Al2 (SO4 )3 .18H2 O. The remaining liq. is then heated, vaporized and concentrated in vacuum to produce the double salt of Al2 (SO4 )3 +K2 SO4 +24H2 O. The double salt is subjected to a reaction in a heated reactor to form basic potassium aluminum sulfate (BKAS), K2 SO4 .3Al2 O3 .4SO3 .9H2 O. The BKAS has a first general particle diameter distribution exceeding 2μm. The excess potassium sulfate is returned to the preceding stage. The BKAS is subjected, as required, to a delaminator to make the sizes of all the particles to <1μm or <=10μm and used as a paper making filler.
