PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the secure and uniform sealing of the end faces of a honeycomb structure by forming the outer lateral faces of small sealing pieces positioned at each of the opening parts of the through holes in a flat or a projected curved shape, in a filter which is of such a construction that the end faces of the honeycomb structure are sealed with the small pieces. SOLUTION: The opening part of each of through holes 2 in a honeycomb structure 1 is sealed with a small sealing piece 4 (a porous silicon carbide sintered product) on one of the end faces 1a side. In this case, the small sealing pieces 4 have a flat or projecting curved external lateral face and are buried into the end faces 1a of the honeycomb structure 1. That is, the small sealing pieces 4 are obtained by extrusion-molding a slurry material into columnar intermediate moldings and then forming these intermediate moldings into almost spherical products with the held of a granulator. Further, a group of the small sealing pieces 4 are positioned in numerous positioning holes 22a formed as positioning recessed parts in a metal mask 22 on a positioning device and the almost spherical parts of the small sealing pieces 4 are turned outward to be pressed into the opening parts. |
