PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diaryl carbonate useful as a raw material for producing polycarbonate in good yield by heating a diaryl oxalate in the presence of a specific catalyst in decarbonylation reaction of the diaryl oxalate. SOLUTION: The decarbonylation reaction of a diaryl carbonate is carried out at 100-450 deg.C, especially about 180-350 deg.C in the presence of a compound of II B group metal. A carboxylic acid salt, a halide, etc., of II B group metal can be used as the compound of II B group metal (e.g. zinc or cadmium). A carboxylic acid salt of zinc is especially preferably used as the compound of II B group metal. Although the compound of II B group metal can directly be used, the compound may be supported on a support such as alumina, silica or zeolite. The supported amount of the compound of II B group metal is normally about 0.1-50wt.%, preferably 0.5-30wt.% as the metal of II B group metal, based on the support. The catalyst may alone be used or used as a mixture of two or more kinds of substances. An amount of the catalyst used is normally about 0.001-50mol% as II B group metal, based on diaryl oxalate. |
