摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a load placed on a braking mechanism by providing engine brake control means for shifting shift stage of a transmission to a lower stage according to the level of a detected or estimated braking load. SOLUTION: A brake load level detecting section 8 measures the temperature of a braking mechanism 7 by using a temperature sensor 1, for example a thermocouple, and calculates the temperature as a brake load level. Then, upon receiving the output of a brake switch 12, the detecting section 8 provides a brake load level during vehicle braking to an engine brake control section 9. Alternatively, the brake load level detecting section 8 estimates the brake load level of the braking mechanism 7 based on a car speed detected by a car speed sensor 13, a steering angle detected by a rotation number sensor 14 or a vehicle weight detected by a weight sensor 16. Then, this obtained brake load level is provided to the engine brake control section 9. The engine brake control section 9 controls a shift control section 6 according to the brake load level.
