Under a throwaway base strip (7) made of insulating material are cavities with one or more test electrodes (21) selective for one type of ion (e.g. Na, K) in the soln. and one or more ref. electrodes (19). Each cavity is sepd. by a permeable membrane (31,41) from an upper cavity. Inside this cavity is initially held a porous resilient cushion (49) impregnated with a standard electrolyte (by the maker) and compressed in the cavity by an attached cover strip (47). Celibration measurements are made with this strip in place. Both strip and attached cushion are then peeled away, with the porous cushion retaining the standard electrolyte, and the test sample (50) is fed into the cavity for measurements to proceed.
