A method for processing an initial operation of a video tape recorder, wherein a CFG(Capstan Frequency Generator) pulse is counted to calculate the remaining of the tape, is disclosed. The method comprises a step of determining whether the reel pulse is inputted or not for two seconds by performing a C-FF mode or C-REW mode; a step of counting the number of CFG pulses for one reel pulse to perform the C-FF mode or the C-REW mode in case that the reel pulse is inputted; a step of generating an alarm signal in case that the reel pulse is not inputted; and a step of removing a sensor during the C-FF mode operation or the C-REW mode operation to obtain the data required at a remaining calculation function.
