Disclosed is a reel driving apparatus for a tape recorder which can prevent a malfunction of a magnetic tape. The reel driving apparatus comprises a reel gear assembly(40) driven by a capstan motor(36), a pair of reel tables(34 and 35), an idler assembly(70) for selectively transferring the driving force of reel gear assembly(40) to one of reel tables(34 and 35), a fluid(63) having a viscosity which allows a torque to be constantly maintained. A propeller type flange(62), which is incorporated with fluid(63), is selectively formed at a lower portion of a reel gear(42) of reel gear assembly(40), an idler gear(51) of idler gear assembly(70) or a coupling portion(92) into which a reel hub of the tape cassette is coupled.
