PURPOSE:To activate a new or deteriorated catalyst for the production of maleic anhydride by the gas-phase catalytic oxidation of benzene, by treating the catalyst under specified conditions with respect to temperature, amount of air supplied, and time, respectively. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst for the production of maleic anhydride by the gas- phase catalytic oxidation of benzene is activated by treating under the following conditions: temperatures are by 5-80 deg.C higher than the temperature at the time of steady reaction ; amount of air supplied is 15-100% of that at the time of steady reaction in terms of space velocity and residence time is 5-80 hr. The effect of the catalyst for the production of maleic anhydride is conspicuous for the catalyst containing molybdenum and vanadium as the main components; for example, a composition of MoO3 0.3--1.0mol, Na2O 0.03-0.2mol, and an oxide of K, Ce, or Ta 0.0001-0.5mol, respectively for V2O5 1mol. This activation method is needless to install new equipment, simple in operation, and suitable for industrial practice. |
