A novel aluminothermic mix, based on finely divided iron oxides and aluminium, contains 5-50 wt.% of a metallic additive which is a ferrochromium alloy of composition (by wt.) 0.1-20% C, 2-40% Si, 5-80% Cr, balance Fe and impurities. Preferably, the metallic additive also contains pure iron.
