In an apparatus of a vacuum cleaner for detecting an inflow of dust by using a photo sensor(4) consisted of a luminescent area(2) and a light intercepting area(3) for detecting an inflow of dust having a microprocessor(8) with a built-in A/D converter(12) and the photo sensor(4), an automatic voltage regulating part(11) connected between the microprocessor(8) and the photo sensor(4) is installed for preventing the photo sensor(4) from performing a miss operation by providing the output of a stable voltage and compensating noise generated in providing the output of a pulse. The method comprises a voltage detecting step(L1) of the light intercepting area(3), an increasing step(L2) in quantity of luminescence, a decreasing step in quantity of luminescence(L3), and an indicating step of cleaning stopping.
