In the preparation of alcohols (IA) and/or aldehydes (IB) by trans-dismutation of olefins (II) with alcohols (III) containing olefinic double bond(s) on ruthenium complex catalysts of formula XX<1>LL<1>Ru = CR<1>R<2> (IV), followed by hydrogenation and/or isomerisation if necessary, (III) contains hydroxyl (OH) group(s) in the allyl position to a C=C double bond; in which R<1>, R<1> = hydrogen (H) or an organic or silyl group; X<1>, X<2> = anionic ligands; L<1>, L<1> = neutral electron-donor ligands.
