FISHING METHOD AND APPARATUS

In a method of fishing, a leading fishing boat (2) tows a trailing fishing boat (4). An open tapered net (8) has its larger end attached to leading boat (2) and its smaller end attached to a pipe (22) connected to trailing boat (4). The fish entering net (8) are directed to pipe (22). Leading boat (2) travels at a velocity "v" such that the kinetic energy 1/2 mv<2> of the fish entering pipe (22) is sufficient to provide potential energy mgh to move the fish through a height "h" into trailing boat (4). The method may be performed using a single boat. The fish are sorted by size using a plurality of meshes (32-48) arranged so that a first mesh (32) has relatively large holes therein to retain large fish and allow smaller fish to pass through, and each successive mesh has relatively smaller holes than the preceding mesh to progressively grade the fish as they pass through the meshes.
