Equipment (100) for pressing one material onto the rear side of another material, especially during manufacture of components with a decorative facing layer and a plastic carrier, uses a tool with an upper (10) and a lower (12) part, enclosing a moulding cavity (14). A frame (16) between both tool parts surrounds the lower tool part (12) and moves relative to the tool parts to seal around the cavity as both tools parts close towards each other prior to the pressing action. A process for production of components with a decorative facing material and a carrier pressed onto the back involves: (a) opening the tool (10,12) and locating the facing material on the upper or lower tool part and the second material, preferably a plastic to form the carrier, in the other tool half; (c) moving the upper tool and the sealing frame (16) together to seal the moulding cavity; (d) pressing the two tool halves together to fill the cavity (14) behind the facing material with the carrier material. Preferably the sealing frame (16) has a raised circumferential sealing edge whose height corresponds to the edge thickness of a product being pressed and whose width is either 0-1 mm to form a pinch edge or 0-2mm and surrounds the contour of the upper tool. Variable distance pieces on the frame (16) determine the gap between the frame (16) and tool upper part (10) when fully closed. Passages in the frame (16) allow air to escape from the cavity (14) during filling. A locking system (22) holds the frame (16) against the tool upper part (10). In a variation of the press design frame (16) movement relative to the upper tool part (10) is effected by a separate hydraulic unit. The carrier material is heated to 180-250 deg C before pressing and has a volume equal to the free volume of the cavity (14) when closed. The lower part of the too (12) is either mounted on a press punch or is an integral part of it.
