The support member consists of a base section (1) which is cast of metal, with a sheet metal part (2) connected to it in order to increase its rigidity. The base section is at least partly U-shaped, and when connected to the sheet metal, forms an enclosed hollow section. The base section and the sheet metal part are connected by rivets. The rivet head (3) is formed by pressing a pin (4) which projects from the base section and passes through a hole in the sheet metal part.
