The device uses the climber's own arm/leg strength and has a number of rope grabs (8,9) located on each of at least two ropes (1,2). An upper grab is connected to a hand, and a lower grab is connected to a foot. Each rope may have thickened parts, formed by knots, sleeves, or balls so that the grabs engage positively into these. The grabs may engage around a rope, clamping it, and they are connected to each other by the rope and by further construction elements (3,4) e.g. a tension spring (3) that engages around the rope. The rope grabs may have integrated manual operating units and automatic switching devices.
