A protective device is for use by motor cyclists and passengers and comprises a jacket (12) made of a wear-resistant material. At least the back of the jacket (12) is equipped with a gas-tight insert (14,16) which serves as an imp act body and is connected to a pressure gas container located in the jacket (12). The container leads gas into the insert(s) (14,16), which is inflated in the manner of a balloon in the event of a collision.
