To dry textile materials, they are held in an autoclave with a supercritical fluid as the drying medium. The material is dried by passing the supercritical fluid over or through it. Preferably the supercritical fluid is carbon dioxide used at a temperature of 40-130 deg C, and at a temperature of <= 60 deg C when drying wool or leather materials. The supercritical fluid is held at a pressure of 8/*10<6> Pa to 25/*10<6> Pa (80-250 bar). The fluid is impelled over or through the material at a speed of 10-10<4> cm/min. in relation to the flow cross section of the autoclave, and preferably 10<2>-10<4> cm/min. The material moves through the autoclave in a plugged or flocking form, or as a wound roll. The drying of synthetic fibres can be combined with dyeing or impregnation with the supercritical fluid.
