An IC card reading and writing machine comprising a main body (101) having an insertion slot (112) into which an IC card is inserted and an input section (114) for inputting an amount of money and a docking station (28) separated from the main body (101) and adapted, when the main body is set thereon, to transfer an electronic currency through a communication line, wherein the main body can be carried for use when the main body (101) and the docking station (28) are separated from each other, while when the main body (101) is set on the docking station, an electronic currency can be transferred to/from another electronic currency holding means through the communication line; and an operation method of the machine.
