Analysis of rotor slot harmonics from a motor (10) is achieved by an adaptive filter (32) controlled in accordance with an algorithm (36), such as the recursive maximum likelihood algorithm. The setting of the filter which gives rise to minimum output (34) provides useful information from which speed information, or other information such as position information or motor condition can be deduced.
