REEL TO REEL TRANSFER OF PIPE AND LARGE DIAMETER TUBING

A structure and method for the reel to reel transfer of butt welded pipe or coiled tubing includes a shipping/storage reel (40) complete with a drive system (44) which is either mounted on shore or mounted on a cargo barge (12) or suitable self propelled transport vessel. An installation reel (16) is complete with a drive system (22, 24) and level wind system (28) which is mounted on a vessel (10) used to lay the pipe (18) on the sea bed. A pipe profile monitoring system (30), reel wrap sensors (60, 62), reel slack retarders (50, 52, 54, 56), and reel drive control system are used to control the transfer speed and the tension in the pipe transfer profile by governing the drive systems (22, 24, 44) on the shipping/storage reel (40) and on the installation reel (16).
