A vacuum cleaner is disclosed for detecting the particle size of the dust sucked in by direct A/D inputting of the voltage change of the light receiver instead of measuring the width of the pulse. The process comprises judging (101) by a controller (10) whether there is an exterior interruption in air suction; amplification of the collector voltage from the light receiver (2) of the photo sensor (3) and measuring (102) of the dust suction frequency by the dust frequency detector (8); calculating (103) the dust particle size by measuring the voltage of the light receiver (2); detecting (104) the finish time of the dust suction and stopping the measurement of the pulse size; storing (105) the value of the largest particle size; and determining (106) the motor output by fuzzy inference depending on the particle size to be able to regulate the performance of the cleaner.
