A printer generates a frame memory(16), a valid and an invalid address in sequence, and it is composed of a address counter(12') which generates a counting pulse every one round, a line memory(18) which outputs an image data according to the address by inputting the output of the frame memory one line after another, a gradation counter(14) which counts a prescribed gradation level according to the counting pulse, a comparator(20) which compares the outputs both of the gradation counter and the line memory, a pixel detector(24) which detects the case that the output of the address counter becomes the invalid address, and a multiflexer(26) which outputs as a heat transfer head(22') by inputting the output of the comparator or the prescribed level value(1) according to the output of this pixel detector. If it is a valid address, N valid heating elements(201) are heated according to the image data, and if it is an invalid address, M auxiliary heating elements(202) are heated with the prescribed amounts.
