摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display device equipped with a DHF cell, whose liquid crystal layer is thicker than that of a widely known DHL cell, by using a liquid crystal layer with a specific maximum value for the switching angle that depends on an impressed voltage and specifying the range of the product of a double refraction ratio and a distance of light passing the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A polarizer 15 is on the outside of an upper plate 13, and a polarizer 16 is attached to a lower plate 14. A transparent electrode 17, 18 on a surface oppositely facing a liquid crystal layer 11 forms an electrode segment for displaying characters and image points. The liquid crystal layer 11 is provided with a switching angleα(U) that depends on an impressed voltage, with its maximum valueα(U=|Umax|) equal to the angle of an optical axis between voltages U=0 and U=≫Umax≫. With this device operated, the liquid crystal layer 11 is arranged so that the switching angleα(U=|Umax|) is at least 30 deg. and that the angle formed by the axis of a spiral body and the polarization direction of the polarizer becomes 45 deg.; and, against the double refraction ratioΔn and a distance deff , in which light passes the liquid crystal layer 11, at U=0, a relational expression, 200nm<Δn.deff <350nm, is satisfied.
