PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens having a variable power of about 2 to 2.4 and a wide view angle and excellent corrective in various aberrations over the entire variable magnification range. SOLUTION: In this zoom lens which consists of the first lens group having a positive refractive power and the second lens group having a negative refracting power successively from an object side and which vary the power by changing spaces between both lens groups, the first lens group is constituted of a No.1a group with a negative refracting power, diaphragm, and No.1b group with a positive refracting power; assuming L to be a distance from the object side face to the image focal point of the first lens in the telephote end, fT to be the focal distance of the entire system in the telephoto end, f1 to be the focal distance of the first lens group, and f1a to be the focal distance of No.1a group, the zoom lens satisfies the following conditional expression: L/fT/1, 2.0<fT/f1 <4.2, 0.1<f1 /|f1a|<0.6.
