A green or near infrared light absorbing water-soluble phthalocyanine or naphthalocyanine derivative which has excellent water resistance after dyeing, is provided. The present invention provides a phthalocyanine or naphthalocyanine derivative represented by the formula: <IMAGE> [I] <IMAGE> or <IMAGE> [II] <IMAGE> wherein X represents a halogen atom substituted at nucleus; M represents two hydrogen atoms, a divalent metal atom, a trivalent mono-substituted metal atom, or a tetravalent di-substituted metal atom; m represents 4 or 8; and n represents an integer of 0 to 12.
