Disclosed is a controlling method for the ink inhalation amount of an ink jet printer to prevent unnecessary ink consumption by inhalation of ink in accordance with a nozzle choke, thus reducing inhalation time. Ink inhalation mode is selected equivalent to the plural case divided by degree of nozzle choke, then memorized by the control part. Users know nozzle choke by printing condition, and input desired inhalation mode to the printing device, input of inhalation key is recognized(41) by control part(24), then users select their own inhalation mode. In case of selection of inhalation amount mode A, control part(24) generates a motor driving signal to a drive motor(18), a piston(17) moves to the A location, ink inhaled from the head(17) flows into the cylinder(16); the piston reaches the A location and control part(24) generates a driving motor signal again, accordingly the piston returns.
