PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a plate-shaped titanium oxide by forming a titanic acid compound from a titanium compound and then an alkali metal titanate salt, and then removing the alkali metal from the salt. SOLUTION: This method for producing a plate-shaped titanium oxide comprises (A) (1) obtaining a titanic acid compound by reacting a titanium compound with an ammonium compound in water, (2) then obtaining an alkali metal titanate salt by reacting the titanic acid compound with an alkali metal in water, (3) then obtaining a plate-shaped titanium oxide by reacting the alkali metal titanate salt with an acid in water to remove the alkali metal and (4) an necessary, obtaining a plate-shaped titanium oxide excellent in crystal property by burning the obtained plate-shaped titanium oxide at 200-1000 deg.C. (B) the resultant plate-shaped titanium oxide has 0.005-5μm particle diameter, 2-200nm thickness and 5-150m<2> /g specific surface area. As necessary, 0.01-20wt.% oxide and/or hydroxide of silicon and/or aluminum is contained in the surface and/or in the inside thereof.
