PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for eliminating metals and color from a dihydric phenol recovered from a polymer composition containing dihydric phenol unit residues in the polymer structure. SOLUTION: A solid dihydric phenol (pref. bisphenol A) is recovered from a polymer containing dihydric phenol unit's reactive residues in the polymer structure, by essential dry distillation of the original dihydric phenol in the presence of hypophosphorous acid at about 0.005-0.05wt.% based on the dihydric phenol.
