PURPOSE: To provide a torque converter with a lock-up mechanism, which can enhance lock-up responsiveness at the time of either driving or coasting. CONSTITUTION: A pump impeller 2 connected to the output shaft of an engine side and a turbine runner 4 connected to the input shaft of an automatic transmission are disposed while being faced to each other via working fluid. A lock-up clutch is provided, which can engage the pump impeller 2 with the turbine runner 4. At least one through hole 16 is provided for a turbine shell 4a, and a valve means 20 is also provided in such a way that the through hole 16 is closed at the time of driving, and opened at the time of coasting. The opening/ closing of the valve means 20 is controlled by sensing the flow of working fluid or by the difference in pressure between the outer and inner sides of the turbine runner of a converter chamber 13. |
