PROCESS FOR PREPARING 2-HYDROXY ETHYL METHACRYLATE

Title compound is prepared by addition of ethylene oxide to methacrylic acid in the presence of catalyst without producing of high molecular polymer during the reaction. A mixture of methacrylic acid, 0.1-10wt.% polymerization retardant or catalyst and reaction solvent 10-600vol.% on the basis of methacrylic acid is reacted with 1.1-1.3 mole of liquid ethylene oxide for 1-10 hours and then the used catalyst and solvent is eliminated to give the title compound. At least one of the ethylene dichloride, methylene dichloride or chloroform is used as a reaction solvent.
