Metal extrusion casting plant disturbance monitoring

A method of casting an extruded metal part (extrusion) from liquid metal cast in a chill (3) (ingot mould) and then drawn out as an extruded part with a congealed or frozen casing (or envelope) and a liquid core. The casting face i. e the height of the liquid metal in the chill, is controlled to a given desired value by determining the casting face and controlling the flow of liquid metal into the chill (3). Disturbances (Z) acting on the casting face and leading to a deviation between the actual value (23) of the casting face and the desired value (20) are estimated and the effect of the disturbances compensated or reduced by means of the estimated disturbance (Z') values.
