A pair of tongs or pliers operable with one hand, having two first parts (1, 2) which can be brought together and separated by the squeezing action of one hand and having two other opposing parts like jaws (3, 4) for contact with an object (17, 33-37) in order to clamp, cut, etc. said object, wherein the adjustment of the two last-mentioned parts (3, 4) is dependent on the position of the two first-mentioned parts (1, 2) in relation to each other, where a first part and a second part form a coherent unit, and where the two units have an adjustable connecting portion (6) running between the two units from points with association between a transition between a first part (1, 2) for the hand and a second part (3, 4) for contact with an object, the connecting part comprising two straight toothed surfaces (7, 8) facing each other, wherein at least one of the toothed surfaces is movably journalled at one end to a coherent unit.
