To prevent the formation of fissures in ceramic restoration components (34) and the widening of any existing fissures, it is proposed that surface areas of the tooth restoration component subjected to particular tensile stress should be provided with a protective layer (52) which is intimately bonded to the ceramic material and preferably applies a tensile stress to it. The protective layer (52) is fully prepared before incorporation of the tooth restoration component and its free surface is complementary to the preparation surface (12) of a tooth stump (10).
