A bending machine has a bottom platen (12) with a bottom platen tool and a top platen (14) with a top platen tool movable with respect to one another to clamp a workpiece, as well as a bending platen (30) that can swivel around a swivelling axis (36) and has bending platen tool segments (44) provided each with a compression surface segment. A bending platen compression surface which presses the workpiece during bending can be composed of the compression surface segments. In order to improve such a bending machine so that the width of the bending platen compression surface may be easily altered, at least one bending platen tool segment is adjustable. In the adjustable bending platen tool segment, the compression surface segment can be moved from an active position in which it adds to the compression surface of the bending platen tool to an inactive position in which it is without effect during a bending operation.
