PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL WAVE GUIDE

PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing optical waveguides by which production time is shortened and a manufacturing cost is reduced. CONSTITUTION: The shapes of recessed parts constituting the desired core parts of the optical waveguides are formed on one surface of a first glass blank (BK7) by etching. Next, a second glass blank (VC-78) having the refractive index higher than the refractive index of the first glass blank and the softening point lower than the softening point is packed into the recessed parts of the first glass blank. Next, the unnecessary parts of the packed second glass blank and/or the etched first glass blank are removed by machining in such a manner that the packed second glass blank is formed to the desired core shapes. The glass blank having nearly the same refractive index as the refractive index of the first glass blank is thereafter joined to the worked surface.
