A part of the cylinders is provided with a thin mixture and another part of the cylinders with a rich mixture and in summation over all cylinders a predetermined air-fuel ratio is achieved. As an example, the engine has three cylinders to which issue suction tubes (2-4). These tubes are fed via an air filter (5) and intermediate air feed channels (6) with fresh air. The suction tubes near their cylinder-side inlet are provided with fuel injection valves (7-9), to which a fuel conduit (10) with corresponding connections issues, and which are controlled by a control apparatus (11) and corresponding control conduits (12-14). On the outlet side, the cylinders are provided with outlet connections (15-17), which with a corresponding collecting tube form an exhaust gas manifold (18), to which a common exhaust gas channel (19) connects, in which is connected a catalyser (20) and an exhaust silencer (21).
