PURPOSE: To improve the stableness of operation in idling by reducing both the cyclic dispersion of each cylinder and dispersion from cylinder to cylinder at one time. CONSTITUTION: A calculating means 21 calculates the mean value of the exhibited mean effective pressures Pi of the cylinders, while a calculating means 22 calculates the standard deviationσPi of the exhibited mean effective pressures of the cylinders. At idling, the air-fuel ratio or fuel injection amount is controlled for each cylinder by a controlling means 23 in the direction of lessening the dispersion in the standard deviationσPi of the exhibited mean effective pressures of the cylinders. At idling, the ignition timing is controlled for each cylinder by another controlling means 24 in the direction of lessening the mean value of the exhibited mean effective pressures Pi of the cylinders.
