ACCELERATION SENSITIVE FLOW SENSITIVE McPHERSON STRUT

A modified McPherson strut has inner (11) and outer (10) tubes which are connected to a wheel of a vehicle. A piston (13) within the inner tube (11) is connected to a piston rod (14) which is connected to the body of a vehicle. The piston (13) divides the inner tube (11) into an upper chamber (16) and a lower chamber (17) with the upper chamber (16) being in fluid communication with an annular gallery (19) formed between the inner (11) and outer (10) tubes. Normal damping is provided by fluid passing through metering valves (23) in the piston (13) between the upper (16) and lower (17) chambers. The strut also includes an accumulator gallery (27) inside the bottom of the outer tube with a foot valve (24) for restricted fluid flow from the lower chamber (17) into the accumulator gallery (27) and essentially unrestricted flow from the accumulator gallery (19) back into the lower chamber (17). The device includes a pair of acceleration sensitive inertia masses (36, 52) in bypass passages for compression and extension control.
