The apparatus for the therapeutic treatment of living tissue has an acoustic source (10) in which a sound wave is electronically initiated in a propagating medium and brought to a focus (F) on a central axis (A). An X-ray source (4) is directed to coincide with the axis (A) and its beam (Z) passes through a section of the source (10) transparent to X-rays but equipped with an alignment cross-wire (not shown) observable by the monitor (7,51'). A pad (14) couples the source (10) to the patient (P) and an echo sensor indicates (7) the correct depth of the focus (F) in the tissue (N). USE/ADVANTAGE - Kidney stones (lithotripsy), tumours and bone weakness. Provides an uncomplicated and cost-effective assembly of standard equipment attractive to smaller clinics and GPs. Combines diagnostic applications with treatment by accurately focused source.
