The bed aid comprises a gallows type assembly (1) which is mounted at the head end of the bed. The assembly is made up from a vertical extension piece (2) and a horizontal mounting piece (3). The extension piece connects to a horizontal cross bar (5) which extends over the width of the bed and which is mounted on the bed frame. Both ends of the cross bar connect into longitudinal bars (10) which run near the sides of the bed, The cross bar has a guide tube (4) into which the lower part of the extension piece fits.
