The method involves treating timber (10) in two stages. In the first stage, the timber is softened until it has a moisture content of 10-80 % by weight. In the second stage, the softened timber is compressed into the desired dimensions by the application of hydraulic pressure. During the two stages, the temperature of the wood can be raised above its softening point. These stages can be followed by a treatment stage, to fix the size of the timber.
