A first machine-readable sticky label (16) is made up for identifying a room (12) containing parts of the equipment (14) and is then affixed to a location in the room. Further machine-readable sticky labels (30) are made up for identifying the respective parts of the equipment in a particular room and are affixed to a position on the equipment where they are easily accessible for inspection. Information on the equipment parts is then entered into a main computer. A copy of at least part of this information can be downloaded to a hand-held computer prior to inspection of the equipment. The hand-held computer is used to read the first label and check that the information from the labels corresponds to the downloaded information, and then once a positive check has been made the information on the further labels is recorded according to a sequence requested by the hand-held computer, so that the status of each part is stored. The hand-held computer generates an error signal if the further sticky labels are read in the wrong order. Finally, the information stored in the hand-held computer is downloaded into the main computer, which then generates a report. Independent claims are also included for (a) the apparatus used to carry out this checking method, and (b) a similar checking method which uses only one set of sticky labels to mark equipment parts, and which compares actual and stored data associated with each part.
