The reaction sintered ceramic has a crystal grain orientation (as determined by the pole figure method) in the direction of a given crystallographic orientation with an orientation degree corresponding to an F value of /- 0.5, a relative density of at least 95% and a residual starting material content of less than 1 vol.% in a composition for producing a preform. Also claimed are: (i) a ceramic component in which the above reaction sintered ceramic is used and which is a mobile or stationary blade or a burner for a gas turbine, a wear-resistant element in a nuclear power station or a counter-plasma element for use in a nuclear fusion reactor; and (ii) the production of a reaction sintered ceramic, comprising moulding a mixture of staring material powder particles, heat treating to obtain a preform and supplying the preform with a gaseous or liquid reactant required to produce the ceramic product during the sintering operation in which the chemical reaction is produced in a zone which is displaced to effect sintering of the preform. |
