PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the full length of an automatic transmission, and to facilitate the application of the transmission to a laterally provided front wheel driving vehicle by using a compound epicyclic gear set to be combined in the radial direction. SOLUTION: At an advance first speed, for example, operation of a first clutch 14 and a first brake 18 is controlled. Motive power of an input shaft 8 to be rotated by an engine 2 is output through epicyclic carriers 38, 40 of a first and a second simple epicyclic gear sets as an output element with the work of a sun gear 44 of the first simple epicyclic gear set 32 as an input element generated by the operation of the first clutch 14 and with the work of a ring gear 36 of the first simple epicyclic gear set 32 as a reaction force element generated by the operation of the first brake 18. When car speed and open degree of throttle are increased in the first speed input condition, a transmission control unit releases the operation of the first clutch 14, and the input element is converted to the ring gear 46 of the second simple epicyclic ear set 34 by the operation of the second clutch 16 so as to shift the speed to a second speed.
